My Friday Finds – Extraordinary Art by Robin Laws
I discovered Robin’s extraordinary art on Instagram a few months back. It’s just so very beautiful… Don’t you think?
Oh my….I could stare into her beautiful portraits for hours.
I asked Robin if I could share her art… here on my site… she sweetly said YES.
Not only is Robin’s art amazing…
Her portrait stories….are…… enchanting……
Here’s Robin’s story of Serena.
Serena, #28 of #onehundredfaces is Ida’s (#9 below) older sister. Do you remember Ida’s sad story? And Lucy? Amazingly Serena found one of the flyers I made about Lucy the lost dog nailed to a telephone pole right outside the train station. She called me, and I headed right over to pick her up. I brought her home to the studio for a portrait and she caught me up on Ida’s situation. She told me that Ida still hadn’t returned home but that she’d found Lucy sitting on her front stoop wagging her eensy tail three days ago. She has no idea how Lucy managed to end up home without Ida. Then she suddenly leaned over to grab her bag while I was turned away mixing paint and pulled that little dog right out of her carpet bag like a magician! Oh my gosh she was so adorable and I was completely caught off guard! It nearly broke my own heart to feel that tiny little fur ball snuggle into my neck because she reminded me of my own little Zippy who died last February. I cried. I couldn’t help it. I held her a long time and told Serena all about Zippy’s adventure filled life and how she herself weighed only 2 1/2 pounds but ate enough dog food to keep a German Shepherd going strong. We laughed, told each other dog stories, cried s few more tears and by the time I got back to the portrait the paint I had mixed was dry. I had to take her back to the train station by then anyway. She was headed north, said she had some idea about where Ida might be living. I did the painting from a photograph on a 6×6 primed board using Ivy’s @ivynewport glazing technique. I took a series of photographs of the process and will post those with a commentary later. I’m proud of the painting:) It really turned out looking a lot like Serena in real life.

I am an artist. This is something I only just discovered this past year. I don’t know exactly what was holding me back from seeing this vital aspect of myself but now that my secret is out I cannot undo its dramatic impact on my life. It has turned my world upside down. It has cracked me open down to my very core. The very best part is has brought me to my place of belonging with other artists.
Don’t you love that my friends?
