Super Quick Tips
A new series (in no particular order) of quick Lr tips.
Some video… some written.
To Do | Empty your Lr Backup Folder
Every time you exit Lr and run a backup, a copy of your Lr catalog is stored in a backup folder.
This is good but….
Overtime… the backup folder can grow quite large and take up valuable disk space.
Note: Lr catalog backups do not backup your photos. Just the Lr Catalog data.
It’s a good idea to go in and clean up your backups folder on a regular basis.
I set a reminder on my phone to clean-up my backup folder ever few months.
If you already know where your backups folder is located… (but maybe it’s been awhile)…
go now and clean it up. (no need to keep reading)
Where is my Lr Backup folder Located?
By default your Lr Backup folder lives with the Lr Catalog.
However, you can choose to store it separately. (and you may have done this at some point)
To find your backups folder (in the default location) follow these steps:
on a Mac
Lightroom menu—>catalog settings —>general—>hit the show button.
Edit menut—>catalog settings—>general—>hit the show button.
This will open finder/explorer to the Lr Catalog folder.
Inside the Catalog folder you will see the Backups folder.
Inside the backups folder are dated folders with each backup.
Open the backups folder (not the dated folders inside the backups folder).
Keep a few from: this week, last week, last month, maybe a few from a few months back.
then delete the rest. (move to trash)
Congrats…. your backups folder is now lighter and leaner.
Help. I don’t See the Backups Folder??
Not to worry….
the next time you exit Lr and the backup panel appears, you will see the backup folder location. (see below)
You can choose a new location to store your backup by hitting choose in this panel and navigating to a new location.
Backups do NOT have to live in your Lr Catalog folder. It’s up to you, where they are stored.
Once you locate your backups folder, follow the steps above to ‘clean it up.’
If your backups folder is empty, it may be because you’ve always skipped your Lr Catalog backups or maybe you cleaned it out?
I recommends running regular catalog backups.
I have mine set to run every time Lr exits, but can always choose skip if I just ran a backup.
Again, catalog backups do NOT backup your photos. Be sure to set up a regular backup system of your computer/photos library.
Feel free to post below.
Until next time.
