We are a back…with another Studio Artist feature…….
Please welcome Kathy Pardell.
Kathy is an amazing example of intentional creativity…. Her story is truly inspirational.
I joke that Kathy took 2 weeks to start making still life magic…..
I just love that she set the intention….then got right to it….. showing up daily…. to learn and grow.
I had the pleasure of spending 3 days with Kathy during Finding Stillness…. and Oh my gosh…
She’s as lovely as her stills.
Welcome my friend….
Q: Tell me…what is your most go-to lens?
A:The EF 35mm f1.4 L USM for Canon. I use this lens for 98% of my shots.
Q: I’m pretty sure you use my LR presets… (insert smile.)
Would you you have a fav or 2 that you use consistently…? : )
A: I’m like a kid in a candy store each time I’m in the Develop module! I have so many favorites depending on the exposure, but I’d say that I am drawn to rumpled and organic for moodier shots and toucha or quiet dreams for my lighter photos.
Q: Okay, tough question my friend…. which 3 props could you not live without?
A: So it’s Sophie’s choice is it?
Okay…I adore my Fortnum & Mason cup and saucer that I bought in England, my barnboard table top that I use for many of my photos and a first edition “Twenty Poems from Rudyard Kipling” that I found in a vintage shop.
Q: Through my classes and over on IG, I’ve watched your photography explode. (In a very short time ….I might add)….
It’s been beautiful to watch. I adore your work Kathy…..
Could you share a bit about your journey to HERE…. and what inspires you most?
A: It’s been a rather quick journey. I knew that I wanted my retirement to be about doing whatever I wanted creatively and that I had to set that up prior to finishing off my career. For me, that meant continuing to write children’s stories, blog, finishing my own children’s scrapbooks and really getting deeper into photography.
I had been doing a few of Xanthe’s classes online and made several films which I really enjoyed. I had seen some course offerings that Xanthe was doing with you and was starting to look into those when I happened upon an issue of Artful Blogging in Michaels. When I saw Barb’s pictures in that magazine I knew immediately that I wanted to create still life, and I scoured her website. Of course, when I came across your kk presets on her blog, I knew that the universe was speaking to me and that I was on the right path. Of course, I had to sign up for some of your classes and learn more.
As an educator, I consider myself a lifelong learner so when I start something new, I pretty much want to know all there is to know about it. I hate not being in the loop. So, since that time, I have put in hours in per day, either gathering, styling, shooting, editing, reading about photography, or studying other’s work.
I post daily and try to change up what I’m doing so that I can continue to learn and grow.
I knew that I was doing okay (in the photographic sense) when I went to your Finding Stillness retreat. I met so many people that I had admired on Instagram and they spoke so positively about my work. It was also so thrilling to put faces to their account names. We all had so much in common and it is not often when you get to play and create among like-minded individuals. We bonded through our photographs and our process.
I felt validated and supported by you and all the other women there, and many of my connections will be life-long. That’s the power of building community and you are the catalyst that makes many of us want to keep growing; by teaching and pushing us to try new things.
Continuing to do the work has proven fruitful already. I have a new identity beyond that of educator and mother and I have the still life community to thank for inspiring me.
A: If you look at my feed, you’ll see a decent mix of both. I think I tend to center around the seasons so spring/summer is likely light and airy and Autumn is definitely dark & moody.
Q: Back Light, Side Light, Front Light
A: Side light, though I’m working hard at mastering back light.
Q: Guilty pleasure?
