Today, I’m thrilled to share my beautiful client turned friend, Jocelyn Kempe.
If you haven’t ‘met’ Jocelyn. You’re in for a treat. She’s pure magic.

Besides being an amazing photographer, Jocelyn is a genius sourdough maker and educator.
A wife, homeschool mom…
Legit ‘donkey rescuer’… and on and on I could go.
Seriously!! How?!!

And her home. Gah.

I knew the Dear 2024 presets would love Jocelyn’s work, so I asked if I could feature a few of her beautiful images.
Then thought… we need to know more about this magical human.
So I asked if she’d be open to a a little interview.
Gratefully she said YES!!

Let’s begin…

Jocelyn, you are magic. I’ve loved getting to know you through our zooms and voice notes.
I’m amazed by all you do in a day…mom, wife, sourdough genius…on and on it goes.
Mind-blowing. How?

Thank you for thinking of me and featuring me.
Sometimes I ask myself how I do all of it and somehow we just flow with the days and they lead us to where we need to be. Some days seem super short and some linger longer - either way there always seem to be moments to capture. I find these tiny moments are caught by the light, it captures my sometimes wild mind and settles me to a still point I want to remember with a photograph.’

Question One:
If you had to sum up YOU in 5 bullets… What would they be?

I deeply care about everything.
Authenticity is very important to me, fake and fast are not my jam.
I crave creating moments for people.
Impeccable Integrity is my main principle in life.’

I’m addicted to beautiful and slow practices that keep me grounded.’

Two:
Ok, so you know I’m all about the light, Jocelyn. Obviously…you too.
Can you tell us a bit about your very special light? It’s mesmerizing.
Where in your world is this magic light? When do you shoot? morning, afternoon…
And don’t even get me started on your beautiful corner. That wall, the texture. The light.

Tell me ‘everything’…

Oh the light. You are the Queen of Light!

So our home was built with a porch that overhangs the house structure so we get this dreamy winter light from the East in the morning and dramatic, magic golden light in the afternoon and early evening on the west side.

Capturing the flickering light is my mood, I prefer darker more deep emotional imagery.

I think it’s the moments when my brain is going from one thing to the next (or all together) that light encapsulates a moment when I see it out of the corner of my eye, and the beauty always makes me aware of how a racing mind won’t actually move forward. It’s like a brake pedal in a way. Sometimes I capture it and other times I just witness it and enjoy it. I suppose you could call this a meditation of sorts.
The wall is my favorite part of the entire house and when we saw it for the first time I knew it was special. It is made from clay so the natural surface is very organic and wonderful.

Three:
And of course I have to ask… What are you shooting with?
Camera, lens?

Thanks to you, Kim I have the Nikon Zfc with the 35 mm lens - it’s magical and so, so fun to work with. The body of the camera is very easy to work with and I love the lens - it is perfect for my moody vibe.

Four:
When it comes to photography. What is your favourite part of the process.
styling, shooting, editing…
sharing on Insta? (you do it so beautifully)

This is such a good question.
Styling is a part of my creative background when I was in school. I actually had a shop in my room as a child that I styled for my imaginary guests that would shop my items from furniture to clothing.

I suppose it’s the possibilities of “what can be” when styling and creating moments for people and photography. Bringing the ideas from my head to my camera is genuinely one of my favorite parts. I love using food, bread, and flowers to create emotion in my photography.

The new Dear 2024 presets are perfect for my style. They are truly my favorite when it comes to editing in Lightroom.

My favorite part of the entire creative process is when I look through the lens and see what is in front of me.
The “moment” is so perfect because it just is.

Five:
What are three creative tools you could not live without?

I could not live without my camera, this is an absolute must.
Do the presets count?! Because I definitely could not live without them!!

Lightroom keeps everything easily manageable and organized, and I love how easy it is.

Lastly, I could not do this without my husband, if it wasn’t for him i could never get all this done.

This was SO fun! Thank you 🙏
I still don’t know how you’re human. I’m certain you’re 90% angel.

Thank you.

Thank you, Jocelyn…
Thank you for sharing your heart, beautiful imagery, and the Dear 2024 preset love.
Also… this rose bucket series... it’s just so beautiful. ♡
I’m so happy to call you my friend.

You can follow Jocelyn’s magic on Instagram and watch for many exciting things to come from her.

xx
