DIY Felt Craft Projects: Cricut Tutorial for Creating Handmade Holiday Decorations and Cards

Why did it take me so long to try cutting felt with my Cricut? Seriously, it's one of the most satisfying crafting experiences.

While I know only a few of my readers might own a Cricut or similar cutting machine, I wanted to share these tips just in case you come across this post and are looking for some guidance.

Here's what I've discovered:

1. Mat Protection: I use transfer paper to cover my pink fabric mat, sticky side up. This simple trick saves my mat from wear and tear. When it gets too fuzzy, I just peel off the old transfer tape and apply a new sheet.

2. Working with Craft Felt: So far I’ve been using the thin craft felt available at Dollarama and Michaels. This is similar.
   To give it more substance, I double up the sheets using a spray bond – and trust me, this stuff works like magic. You spray one side of the felt, place the second piece on top, and then heat-press it. If you don’t have a heat press, an iron works fine, too.

3. Optimal Cricut Cut Settings: For cutting, I set my machine to felt with acrylic, apply extra pressure, and use the rotary blade. This combination has worked wonders for me.

The Felt Cards

Creating these felt cards was simple yet so satisfying.
I started with Strathmore 6x9 watercolor paper, cutting it down to two 4x6 cards.
Then, I printed a variety of holiday messages with my Tango printer.
The next step was fun – I glued various felt cutouts onto the cards.

To finish, I added a personal touch with my favorite date stamp. (also my alphabet stamps)

How to Make the Garland

Inspired by last year’s paper dove garland, I cut the felt doves with the Cricut. I punched a hole for the string and used hemp cord and beads to string the garland together.

How To Elevate The Felt Projects

I’d consider using a wool blend felt to elevate the felt-making projects. This felt would not only enhance the texture and appearance but also bring a luxurious feel to them.

Instead of simply using glue for projects like the felt cards, next-level the project by stitching the felt ornaments onto the card.
